If I could

IF I COULD

If I could I’d hold you to my heart
Protect your spirit, help you on the narrow path
Waiting for the wheel of time
To spin our way again.
Sometimes I think what we might have been
or think we are, not destiny, keeps us apart.

If I could I’d hold you to my heart
The camouflage raiment, a finely honed disguise
Keep your distance, don’t invade my privacy.
Controls and secret boundaries
Now I’ve hidden me.
I know you see me only as I appear to be
pleasure seeking, one of Life’s eternal butterflies.

If I could I’d hold you to my heart
You look at me with eyes that don’t seem to see
That I know exactly what you need of me.
